Research is Important, Hetalia Fans.

Shitty Hetalia OC and Fanfiction: JRock North Korea and Teacher Russia

So, long after I entered the critique of this North Korea into the queue, italys-ovaries sent it in, as well, but this time, there is a fanfiction to go with it. So, let’s review that.

Here’s what italys-ovaries had to say about this OC:

Found this North Korea on deviantart.

I’m actually going to use a different picture than the one that italys-ovaries sent us, since the original picture that she included was in the previous post about this OC.

But here’s her North Korea design with the genderbent version of it.

HetaliaxNyotalia North Korea. I kinda made them look like twins, huh…? I’m not good at genderbends.T^T

Korean names~ Nyotalia NK: Im Taek
Hetalia NK: Im Hee

So NK, Art (c) Me Hetalia, Nyotalia (c) Hidekazu Himaruya

I don’t think North Korea could even AFFORD to wear that kind of stuff, the majority of the people are completely isolated from the rest of the world and there is a famine.

Let’s not forget that there is a push to be more traditional in North Korea, and as such, there is a from of dress code in the nation. And that shit up there doesn’t look traditional at all, nor does it follow the dress code.

Or, you know, logical wear for  ANYONE outside of maybe teenagers dressing up for shits and giggles.

But, leaving the clothing, for it is a very small worry of ours. Grab your favorite painkiller and let’s move into the official profile and, the thing we’ve all been waiting for, the fanfiction itself.

Anyway, here’s what they said on their profile.

Yo, guys! I’m actually _____________’s account, this account will be purely for Hetalia art since my main friend on my other account hates the guts out of Hetalia, I don’t want to spam her Anyway.

Well, that’s nice and polite and everything, but you shouldn’t let what your friends like or dislike dictate what you do.

My username explains it all, I guess. North Korea isn’t an official character; he/she is fan made and I don’t even know if North Korea is a boy or girl, but I guess fans could portray North Korea as either gender as they wish. I’ve always viewed North Korea as a girl, so that’s exactly how I’ll draw her. Yes, guys. I have done my research.

You’ve done your research? If so, then why do you misrepresent North Korea so much? I have many, many suspicions about how true that last statement is.

I did everything I could before making this character. Although I’m still trying to alter her appearance cause it’s a slight self-insert; I’m just uncreative like that.

And they ADMIT that it’s a self insert.

Well, at least she knows when to admit it. Instead of claiming, “MAH OC IZ NAWT MEH” despite the evidence. But I very much doubt that she “did all she could” before making her self-insert.

They don’t have a real bio anywhere that actually says anything about the character, but they do have a few fanfics, one of which is about the Korean war, and which I’m copy/pasting here for convenience. Which is very short and isn’t actually history dense at all.

Okay, I’m glad that the OC creator is admitting that this OC is extremely flawed and is working towards getting this OC to be better. That is the first step towards making a good Hetalia OC, and I genuinely respect that.

However, if you were to do your research, OC creator, you should have not made it a self-insert in the first place.

But let’s move on to the actual fanfiction now.

"I can’t believe he did that." North Korea slammed her fist onto the table, hitting it so hard the table shook.

"Watch it, you made me spill my tea aru!" China complained, hurriedly jumping up and wiping the tea off his dark green military outfit.

"Don’t you know what he did?" North Korea glared at her the guy she called her older brother. "Do you have any idea what just happened?" China facepalmed.

"Yes, I do aru. America took up arms with South Korea against you aru."

That verbal tic is getting really annoying really fast.

"Exactly!" she cried, crossing her arms and gritted her teeth. She continued glaring at China.

"Well, what do you expect me to do about it aru?"

"Oh, I don’t know…. HELP ME FIGHT THE WAR!!" North Korea could not help shouting that last part. Anyone could easily see that she was infuriated.

"Look, I wish I could, but America is a part of the Allied Forces aru." China tried to explain.

"And?" North Korea sounded bitter.

"And I’m a part of the Allies too aru!"

Whoa, whoa, hey.

The Allies were disbanded after WWII and the beginning of the Cold War, which had its beginnings at the Yalta conference.

China wouldn’t have been so concerned about being part of the Allied forces if they no longer existed, and they wouldn’t have existed by the time the US became involved in Korea.

"What difference does that make? Your allies and friends are more important than your sister?" She unfolded her arms and clenched her fists. "I see what you’re saying. You’re too busy with your own problems to put aside time to help me in the war."

"You’re wrong-"

"…because the People’s Republic of China  DID  support and help you, North Korea, you big dumb."

"No wonder the world looked down on you when your military crushed those peaceful college students asking for a democracy."

Is she…referring to the incidents at Tienanmen Square? Those happened in the 1980s, author! Not in the late 1940s and 1950s! Are you living in the universe where all time smears together? Am I going to vote for the next Holy Roman Emperor as I fly my TARDIS to Pompeii to see it erupt because FUCK ALL?

"Hey, I said not to bring that up-"

North Korea had run out of the room, slamming the door shut as she went.

"I’ll ask teacher Russia," she thought to herself.

"You want me to what da?" Russia looked confused. He scratched the side of his head with his hand while twirling his overly long scarf with his other.

"Take my side in the war."

"Doing that would make the rest of the allies turn on me. I’m sorry, but you’ll have to ask someone else da."

Well, initially, the USSR actually supported South Korea, but not because of the Allies. So, I guess I can give you a partial pass.

"That’s exactly what big brother said." at that North Korea started tearing up. Her biggest allies were refusing to help her. First her brother, and how her teacher. Oh, the world couldn’t have gotten more worse.

Why is she going to cry? She’s about to go to war…she shouldn’t be showing weakness. Or acting like a child.

Especially it was a war against her own twin brother.

Russia frowned at his student starting to cry. He pitied her. Russia bent down until he was eye level with the girl.

"I’ll figure something out da. We’ll see."

Okay, why is he her teacher, again? I don’t understand, is it because both the USSR and North Korea were communist nations? That seems like a stretch to me.

"Now you’re starting to sound like Japan," North Korea scowled, crossing her arms.

"Exactly." Russia joked.

What does that even  MEAN?

Russia ended up taking North Korea’s side in the Korean war. The fighting went on for years before North and South agreed to stop fighting, but an armistice was never signed. The two are still considered to be at war.

I am going to say, this is a little more researched than.. pretty much everything else on here, but still. And "I’ll ask teacher Russia" is completely… guh.

I’d like to disagree. There are references to historical events, but they are all jumbled up and outright  WRONG.

Yes, the last portion was correct, partially. She is missing a lot of information, and she seems to be bullshitting her way through this whole “I did research” excuse. Really…she seems like she wants to look like her OC isn’t a self-insert by disguising herself as knowledgeable and fooling people into thinking she did research.

Because there is no way you can say you did research on an OC when you say the student protests in Tienanmen Square occurred during the Korean War.

There is just no way.
