bitetheawesome asked: Curious on the process of reviewing OCs and how long it generally takes.

Well, actually writing the review takes anywhere from ten minutes to an hour, depending on how long the material in question is. But researching at least doubles the time it takes, especially if we are unfamiliar with the area. So I’d say anywhere from 15 minutes to two hours.

And really, the process isn’t all that interesting. I usually just have one tab open with Tumblr and what we are reviewing, and another few tabs open with things like Google, Google Scholar, JSTOR, Wikipedia…that sort of thing. Just for researching and fact-checkng. I don’t know exactly how Zhenya reviews, but I imagine it’s similar.

I really hope they aren’t serious about this but since I didn’t see any information about it, and the submitter of the photo to Photobucket may not even own him, I can’t be sure. Outside of the fact that there is a canon Romania design, why is Romania even like this? Romania is NOT that similar to Russia, despite the fact that Romania was occupied by the Soviet Union and was under communist control. Romania’s ethnic groups are vastly different from those in Russia, too! I’m just…why would you recolour Russia to make Romania. That’s just…not something you should do, especially for a Hetalia OC.

Well. Where do we start with these two OCs.

Let’s just dissect he paragraph, line-by-line, as I usually do. Except, now that we’ve read it once, the awful jumps out even more.

Okay, stop right there. I looked up FFA, and it stands for, among other things, Future Farmers of America. I could understand if Oklahoma was wearing an FFA shirt because farming is one of Oklahoma’s main industries (which it is,) but simply wearing an FFA shirt and, I’m assuming, being part of the FFA club, just because it’s “awesome,” is not reasoning at all.
and the bandaid is because of the tornadoes that blow through during the spring and summer.
That’s kind of in poor taste, I would think. Especially if those tornadoes are very destructive and result in deaths.

My personal opinions on mpreg aside, Alaska wouldn’t be the biological child of America and Russia. For one, unless otherwise specified, I’m assuming that Alaska is the personification of all Alaskan history and people, not just post-Russian colonisation. Alaskan history and people were around long before Alaska was an actual state, and that should at least be mentioned.
And Russia and America did not fight or compete or really have an intense relationship with one another or for Alaska. As I’ve said several times before, Alaska was sold at very cheap prices. To the Russian Empire, Alaska was more of a hindrance than anything.
So really, if Alaska WAS Russia’s child, he would have probably just got tired of taking care of her, and just leave her with America.

Why is she possessive of THOSE states, exactly? And why is she possessive of other states, at all? If anything, wouldn’t he be possessive of…I don’t know, Alaskan cities and the idea of being away from other states?
Currently, she’s just messing with Texas.
But why is she doing that. Texas is in a completely different part of the United States as Alaska, and the two really don’t have much in common other than the fact that they’re both US states and they both tend to not conform to the rest of the US. But that is no reason for Alaska to mess with Texas.
I guess that, overall, these OCs could be a lot worse (well, I know that the Oklahoma OC could be,) but they’re still flat, bland, boring, and inaccurate, and there is very little historical or cultural information outside of the very basics. If I were the OC creator, I’d definitely change some things and eliminate some things completely.
And make Alaska something more logical than Alfred and Ivan’s lovechild.

However, the characters representing China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Thailand all have black/ dark brown hair which is common for asian people. Along with Seychelles and India having dark skin. Prussia however has a genetic mutation that causes him to be albino. My personal view is, if it’s an AU, and you retain the personality of the characters, then it’s not as bad, but usually, people just randomly turn Hetalia characters into badass, OOC magical creatures, and it’s almost as bad as making an OC, at that point.

We actually have an entire tag dedicated to interpretations of canon characters that are almost like making OCs, because that’s how common it is.

If I recall correctly, this is her real life name, so…definitely a self-insert, or whatever.

Er…anyways.

Wait, what? She’s using her real full name for a Hetalia OC?

That’s really not safe, nor is it logical. Why would you make a character for Hetalia with your exact name? Why would you even use your name for a character in Hetalia?

Age: 17

Personality: heart of gold and friendly and funny and brave and wants her friends safe

In my opinion, that is a very bland personality. And, the heart of gold thing is sort of stupid, again, in my own opinion.

It really is. I mean, if you’re going to be a nation-tan, you’d probably be brave and want your allies safe, so pointing that out for one particular character is stupid.

And the other traits…they sound like a general character. But of course, this OC IS a human OC, so I shouldn’t be surprised.

Er…

Anyways, her history doesn’t involve anything Hetalia related. No country interactions, except for the fact that she RANDOMLY STUMBLED UPON THE CHARACTERS IN HER OWN WORLD. You know, instead of like, poofing into the Hetalia world, or whatever. I don’t know which is worse, the characters coming to the “real world” ( Which would be pretty spic, if you ask me. But, not if they were greeted with this person. ) or when a person is thrown into the Hetalia world. Either way, it’s not a good plan.

I don’t like the idea of either, really, and if anything, I would think that the nation-tans exist in the “real” world, but most humans just don’t know of their existences. But of course, that’s just my headcanon.

But the fact that this girl just randomly met nation-tans out of the blue? That’s idiotic and proof of a poor writer/OC creator.

History: Her parent died in a car crash when she was 7 she lived in a orphanage for 2 years then got adopted they tock care of her then she got a job from the mayor of the town to fix it

How cliche. The parent(s?) die while the girl is at a young age. And, what the hell? Why does she only have one parent? Well, it could make sense, but she doesn’t mention anything about the mother/father leaving, so that leads me to assume that the mother either got a baby zapped into her womb or her dad got pregnant, somehow.

I’m assuming that the writer meant “parents,” since that makes the most sense. I’m more confused as to who the “they” is in this situation. Who adopted her, exactly? And what is she trying to fix with her job from the mayor, exactly? The fact that she has no parents? That’s going to be extremely difficult…


And, the orphanage, I don’t know much about orphanages, which is fine, I guess. I know I lived in an orphanage once. But that’s besides the point. Anyways, shouldn’t Erika be…traumatized or something? After all, her parent(s) died. I dunno, she makes it seem like she brushes the whole thing off, or even, “I’M A FREE BITCH, BABY.”

Two years, orphanage…blah, blah. ADOPTED. \o/ ( Those poor fuckers that decided to adopt her… )

So, there is no information about what her adopted family was like. Did she have siblings? Did she have abusive siblings? Did she have any incestuous relationships with any of her family members? I’m surprised she didn’t. OR MAYBE SHE DID. And I’m just not reading between the lines. And, when she grew up she got a job from the mayor. Doing what? Fixing what? What town? What happened to her family? Where does she live? Does she live on the streets? I hope she lives on the streets.

If you put aside the fact that Erika has nothing to do with Hetalia, I don’t see anything wrong with it. :U

Well, I don’t know, the fact that she’s a Hetalia OC who has nothing to do with the nation-tans, but has a crush on Francois makes me want to throw a desk at someone.

Anyways, we RP’d with this girl for a bit, and uh…she got a magic tattoo. Of a wolf. Derp.

Well, those are just logical dislikes for any human being, ever. I mean, with a few exceptions, of course, but most people don’t (and shouldn’t) like those things.

Really, this OC is…very, very bland. It’s just boring to read through. And she really has no indication of being a Hetalia OC, either. Other than maybe the fact that she has some nation-tans mentioned in her profile.

So, really…she could be an OC for anything, an in Hetalia, you’re supposed to have blatantly nation-tan characters.
